Solfit panels were used to create the largest-scale over clad solar PV roof in the UK. With 1168kWp capacity and 3,115 panels, the project significantly reduced carbon emissions, whilst demonstrating SolFit’s unique ability to solve roofing challenges on a large scale.
The Rainhill Road project presented significant challenges. The solar solution had to address an ageing, leaky roof, without compromising solar efficiency, and while meeting carbon offset goals.
Solfit panels were installed over the existing roof as an over clad system. This design remedied the leaky roof issue, preventing water ingress where the interlocking panels were situated, with transparent panels installed over existing skylights to retain light within the building. The installation was a resounding success, resolving roof leaks, achieving the client’s sustainability objectives, and generating an impressive estimated annual output of 942,930kWh, resulting in a significant reduction of 195,250kg of CO2e in the first year.
”The initial idea was to overclad with metal and then install traditional solar on top but after the structural survey it was clear the structure wouldn’t take the additional weight. SolFit’s system came in just under on the weight loading, so it was really the only option available. We had 4000 panels installed and 500 transparent panels to let the light through.
